ATM Security: Avoid card skimming and cloning

⏱ Read time: 5 min 📅 Published: 25/02/2026

💡 Quick Tip

Skimming and card cloning are still real threats. Learn visual techniques to detect fraudulent devices, how to protect your PIN effectively, and what steps to take immediately if you suspect your security has been compromised.

The Invisible Enemy in the Slot

Cloning happens when criminals install fake readers and micro-cameras. Before inserting your card:

  1. Pull the Reader: Fake ones are often taped on. If it moves, don't use it.
  2. Check the Keypad: If it feels loose, it might be a "ghost" overlay.
  3. Cover your PIN: Always use your other hand. Without the PIN, a cloned card is much less useful. Use Contactless/NFC if available; it is much harder to clone.

📊 Practical Example

Imagine withdrawing $50 at a tourist ATM. You don't check the reader. By night, you get alerts for $1,200 in unauthorized purchases. They cloned your card. If you had spent 5 seconds pulling the reader and covering your PIN, they would have nothing. Those 5 seconds save you weeks of police reports and bank claims.
